Tincan Island Container Terminal Limited (TICT), one of Nigeria’s leading multinational terminal operators, is currently recruiting qualified and experienced professionals for the position of Deputy Safety Manager in Lagos State.

Established in 2004, TICT operates Terminal B at Tin-can Island Port, Apapa, Lagos, under a long-term concession agreement with the Federal Government of Nigeria. The company continues to play a major role in Nigeria’s maritime and logistics sector through continuous investment in port infrastructure, operational efficiency, and safety standards.

Role Summary

The Deputy Safety Manager will assist the Safety Manager in overseeing and strengthening the company’s Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) systems across terminal operations. The role involves ensuring regulatory compliance, promoting workplace safety culture, conducting risk assessments, supporting investigations, and coordinating safety awareness programs.

The successful candidate will work closely with operations teams, contractors, and management to ensure all activities are carried out in line with approved safety procedures and industry standards.

Main Responsibilities

Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance

• Support the enforcement of company safety procedures and compliance with local and international HSE regulations.
• Assist in implementing safety initiatives and operational safety strategies.
• Participate in reviewing and updating safety policies, procedures, and control measures.
• Monitor the availability and condition of personal protective equipment (PPE) and emergency response equipment.

Risk Assessment & Incident Investigation

• Coordinate hazard identification exercises, risk assessments, and job safety analyses.
• Carry out regular safety inspections across terminal operations and work environments.
• Participate in safety audits and monitor corrective actions for compliance.
• Investigate incidents, unsafe conditions, and near misses while supporting root cause analysis processes.
• Maintain accurate incident reports, investigation records, and follow-up documentation.

Training & Safety Awareness

• Assist in organizing safety induction sessions, toolbox meetings, and refresher training programs.
• Support emergency drills and ensure operational readiness for emergencies.
• Maintain training records and prepare safety awareness materials.
• Promote HSE campaigns and participate in weekly safety engagement meetings.
• Support the development and maintenance of emergency response procedures.

Contractor Monitoring & Reporting

• Ensure contractors and third-party personnel comply with company safety standards.
• Review contractor permits, safety plans, and compliance documentation.
• Prepare HSE reports, KPI dashboards, and incident summaries.
• Maintain documentation required for audits and regulatory compliance.
• Provide input during monthly and quarterly safety review meetings.

Educational Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Occupational Health & Safety, or a related discipline.
• Minimum of 5 – 7 years relevant HSE experience.
• At least 2 years experience in a supervisory or leadership position.
• Previous experience in ports, logistics, terminals, oil & gas, or manufacturing industries will be an added advantage.
• NEBOSH International General Certificate is mandatory.
• ISO 45001 Lead Auditor certification, HSE Level 1–3, or related qualifications are desirable.
• Membership of professional organizations such as ISPON or IOSH is considered beneficial.

Required Skills & Competencies

• Strong understanding of HSE regulations, OSHA standards, and ISO 45001 requirements.
• Excellent risk assessment, audit, and incident investigation abilities.
• Good leadership, communication, and safety training skills.
• Ability to promote and sustain a positive safety culture.
• Strong documentation, reporting, and compliance tracking skills.
• Knowledge of terminal operations, contractor safety management, and emergency response systems.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and HSE reporting tools.
