Job Title: Team Lead, Transaction Monitoring

Reports To: Head, Financial Crime Monitoring

Job Summary

The successful candidate will oversee the Transaction Monitoring unit, ensuring the effective review, investigation, and escalation of suspicious transactions in line with anti-money laundering and counter-financing regulations. The role also involves driving compliance with regulatory standards while improving operational efficiency within the monitoring framework.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise Transaction Monitoring Analysts to ensure productivity and compliance with service standards.
  • Review high-risk and complex transaction alerts while approving escalations for Suspicious Transaction Reports (STRs) in accordance with regulatory guidelines.
  • Coordinate end-to-end transaction monitoring processes including alert generation, investigations, and case resolution.
  • Ensure compliance with CBN AML/CFT/CPF regulations, BOFIA requirements, and NFIU reporting obligations.
  • Monitor the quality and consistency of investigations, documentation, and reporting across the team.
  • Identify emerging financial crime patterns and recommend appropriate risk mitigation strategies.
  • Collaborate with Compliance, Audit, and Business Units on escalations, investigations, and reporting requirements.
  • Prepare periodic management reports covering transaction alerts, compliance trends, and risk exposure.
  • Drive process improvement initiatives, automation, and optimization of monitoring systems.
  • Coordinate audit activities and respond to regulatory reviews and inquiries.
  • Mentor and coach team members to support professional development and operational excellence.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Knowledge of AML/CFT/CPF regulations and financial crime monitoring frameworks.
  • Strong communication, integrity, resilience, and decision-making capabilities.
  • Hands-on experience with transaction monitoring and analytics tools.

Educational Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Law, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 6–10 years of experience in AML or Transaction Monitoring functions with leadership responsibilities.
  • Professional certifications such as ACAMS, ICA, or CFE will be an added advantage.
  • Prior experience within a Tier-1 or multinational financial institution is preferred.
  • Experience handling regulatory engagements and advanced monitoring systems is desirable.
