Role Purpose

The Head of Arts, Nigeria will provide strategic leadership, direction, and governance for the British Council’s Arts Programme in Nigeria. The role contributes to national and global arts objectives while strengthening UK–Nigeria collaboration in the arts and creative economy.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Lead and deliver the British Council’s arts and creative industries strategy in Nigeria
  • Develop programme vision and country-level operational plans
  • Create new opportunities within Nigeria’s arts and creative economy sectors
  • Support enterprise development and creative economy policy through UK–Nigeria collaboration

Staff Leadership & Line Management

  • Provide effective line management to arts programme staff in Nigeria
  • Build high-performing teams and support professional development

Thematic & Regional Leadership

  • Represent Nigeria and provide thought leadership across British Council arts initiatives
  • Contribute actively to programme leadership and overall country operations

Business Development & Stakeholder Management

  • Develop new opportunities for external income and partnerships
  • Build and manage relationships with key creative sector and private sector stakeholders

Operational Management & Governance

  • Ensure accountability for financial and non-financial performance targets
  • Manage risk, governance, and compliance for the Nigeria Arts Programme
  • Provide monthly and annual programme assurances

Role Requirements

  • Degree or higher education qualification in Arts, Culture, Heritage, or Humanities
  • Written and spoken English proficiency
  • Experience managing large teams or organisations
  • Experience commissioning and managing consultants and partner organisations
  • Proven experience in fundraising for arts and creative economy projects
  • Strong knowledge of UK and Nigerian creative sectors
  • Extensive experience in arts programme management with a creative economy focus

Desirable Experience

  • Innovative use of digital and social media to engage audiences
  • Experience working with both large and medium-sized organisations
  • Experience delivering arts programmes in multiple Sub-Saharan African countries
